Fort Washakie Historic District
Originally called Fort Brown, Fort Washakie was established in 1871 to protect the Shoshone Tribe on the newly created reservation. The fort was renamed Fort Washakie in 1878 to honor the renowned Chief. In the late 1800s, the legendary Buffalo Soldiers—African-American U.S. Cavalrymen—were stationed there. The historic district is home to many original military buildings including the impressive cavalry building.
